About Dave Roberts
Dave Roberts was born in Wheelock, Sandbach, in 1952 and immediately sought refuge in nearby Middlewich a town which, unlike nearly everyone else, he immediately found fascinating. His Mum was from Moston and his Dad from Middlewich, although the Roberts family had strong connections with Liverpool, which probably explains a lot. Arthur, Dave’s Dad, was foreman electrician at Cerebos Ltd and would often take his young son to the factory on Sunday mornings where he would look at all the gleaming brass dials and switches and make adjustments to the generators.
Dave, of course, was mesmerised, even though he hadn’t the remotest idea what all the equipment was, or was supposed to do. What more natural that Dave should, in due course, enter the world of radio, where he had his own dials and switches to play with, still without the remotest idea as to what everything was, or was supposed to do. In the sixties when the pirate radio era was in full swing, like many other teenagers, Dave longed to be a part of the new, exciting, pop radio scene. Easier said than done, as so many others have found out over the years.
So Dave started Dees Disco in 1974 and in 1989 joined Radio Leighton, where he met Stewart Green, which also probably explains a lot. There were a few guest slots on Radio Manchester, Radio Shropshire, Radio Stoke and others, but mostly it was a question of waiting around hoping that someone would invent internet radio. Which someone eventually did, and here we are! Dave’s masterful, if somewhat hit and miss, handling of STR’s Cheshire Folk Show is explained by the fact that he was one of the founders of the Middlewich Folk & Boat Festival. Admittedly, Music Memories is not so easily explained.
